Brazil states map quiz
Learn the locations of Brazil's 26 states and the Federal District with an interactive map quiz. The country covers much of South America, so dividing the map into the North, Northeast, Central-West, Southeast, and South makes all 27 federal units easier to remember.
Start with the largest northern states
Amazonas dominates the northwest and borders Acre, Rondônia, Mato Grosso, Pará, and Roraima. Use Roraima and Amapá as northern anchors, then place Pará along the lower Amazon and Tocantins directly south of it. Acre is the far-western state, while Rondônia lies between Acre and Mato Grosso.
Follow the Atlantic coast
The long coastline provides a reliable route through the Northeast. Move from Maranhão through Piauí, Ceará, Rio Grande do Norte, Paraíba, Pernambuco, Alagoas, Sergipe, and Bahia. Several of these states are narrow or compact, so learn their north-to-south order before focusing on exact outlines.
Connect the center with the southeast
Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, and the Federal District form the Central-West group. The tiny Federal District sits inside Goiás. To the southeast, identify Minas Gerais as the large inland state surrounded by Bahia, Goiás, Mato Grosso do Sul, São Paulo, Rio de Janeiro, and Espírito Santo.
Finish with the southern states
São Paulo links the Southeast with Paraná, Santa Catarina, and Rio Grande do Sul. These three southern states form a clear coastal sequence. Espírito Santo and Rio de Janeiro are smaller coastal targets, while Minas Gerais has no ocean coast.
