Without state lines, the contiguous United States becomes one broad shape. The two coasts, Great Lakes, Mississippi system, and the separate Alaska and Hawaii insets provide the surviving structure.

Rectangular western states lose their most obvious clues, and small northeastern states sit extremely close together. Central states also lack coastlines that would otherwise fix their position.

Circle the perimeter states first, add the Great Lakes and Mississippi corridor, and finish with the interior west and Great Plains. Practice the Northeast at maximum zoom.
