Japan prefectures map quiz overview

The Japan prefectures map quiz asks you to find all 47 prefectures directly on a map of Japan. It focuses on location, island groups, regional order, and the way prefectures connect across Honshu, Hokkaido, Shikoku, Kyushu, and Okinawa.

What makes Japan prefectures different

Japan is long and narrow, so the challenge is less about memorizing a compact grid and more about reading north-to-south position. Prefectures can be easier once you group them by island and by major regions such as Tohoku, Kanto, Chubu, Kansai, Chugoku, Shikoku, and Kyushu.

What you will practice

  • Identify all 47 prefectures by position on the map
  • Separate neighboring prefectures in dense areas such as Kanto, Kansai, and Chubu
  • Build a mental route from Hokkaido in the north to Okinawa in the southwest

Study tips

Start with the large anchors: Hokkaido, Tokyo, Osaka, Kyoto, Fukuoka, Kagoshima, and Okinawa. Then fill in the neighboring prefectures around each anchor. This makes the map feel like connected regional clusters instead of a long list of names.

Okinawa is shown as an inset so it stays visible while the main islands remain large enough to play accurately. Treat it as a separate southwest anchor when practicing.

Common mistakes

Players often confuse prefectures around the Tokyo area, the Sea of Japan side of Chubu, and the smaller prefectures of Kansai. Replaying those clusters is the fastest way to improve.

Timed and untimed practice

Use untimed rounds while learning the regional layout. Once you can place most prefectures without scanning the full map, turn on the timer to build faster recall.
