United Kingdom regions map quiz: what the 12 areas mean

This United Kingdom regions map quiz asks you to place 12 large areas: the nine regions of England, plus Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland. It is a useful way to learn the regional geography of the UK without treating the map as a list of counties. Scotland, Wales, and Northern Ireland are constituent countries of the UK; the nine English entries are England's highest-level regions.

The set follows the UK International Territorial Level 1 geography. That makes it especially useful for school geography, regional statistics, and anyone who wants a clear first map of the United Kingdom.

Start with the four parts of the UK

Before memorising the English regions, fix the larger outline in your mind. Scotland occupies the north of Great Britain and includes many islands. Wales lies to the west of England. Northern Ireland is across the Irish Sea on the north-east of the island of Ireland. England fills the southern and central part of Great Britain.

These broad anchors prevent a common mistake: trying to place every English region before recognising which areas are Scotland, Wales, or Northern Ireland.

Learn England from coast to centre

The nine English regions are easier to remember as a connected map than as nine separate names. North East and North West sit at the top of England, with Yorkshire and The Humber between them and the east coast. East Midlands and West Midlands form a central pair. East of England lies east of London, while South East wraps around London toward the Channel and South West extends along the long peninsula toward Cornwall.

  • Use London as the compact central-southern landmark.
  • Pair North East with North West, then East Midlands with West Midlands.
  • Trace South West from Bristol and Devon toward Cornwall rather than looking for a small isolated region.
  • Check the east coast for East of England and Yorkshire and The Humber.

Regions that are easy to confuse

East Midlands and West Midlands are adjacent, so their names alone are not enough. Look for the West Midlands west of the central spine of England and the East Midlands toward the east. North East is much smaller than North West. South East is not simply the area south of London: it stretches around London and reaches the Channel, while South West is the long south-western peninsula.

London can also be missed because it is small compared with the surrounding regions. Find it first, then use it to separate East of England, South East, and the Midlands.

A practical way to study the UK map

Begin with untimed rounds and name the four UK countries aloud. Next add the coastal and extreme regions: North East, North West, East of England, South West, Wales, and Northern Ireland. Finally practise the central cluster around London and the Midlands. Once the pattern feels familiar, timed rounds are a good test of whether you can move from a region name to its position without scanning the whole map.
