Italy regions map quiz

This map quiz covers all 20 regions of Italy. Practice their locations from the Alpine north through the peninsula to Sicily and Sardinia.

Build the map from north to south

Begin with Piedmont, Aosta Valley, Lombardy, Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol, Veneto, and Friuli Venezia Giulia. Liguria curves along the northwest coast, while Emilia-Romagna stretches across the northern side of the Apennines.

Learn central, southern, and island regions

Tuscany, Umbria, Marche, and Lazio form a useful central group. Continue south with Abruzzo, Molise, Campania, Apulia, Basilicata, and Calabria. Finish by learning Sicily and Sardinia as two separate island regions.

Practical map clues

  • Use Apulia as the heel and Calabria as the toe of the peninsula
  • Find Lazio around the central western coast
  • Compare the small neighboring regions of Molise and Abruzzo
  • Alternate map rounds with the Italy region shape quiz

Regions that are easy to confuse

In the northeast, separate Trentino-Alto Adige/Südtirol from Veneto and Friuli Venezia Giulia by following the international border and the head of the Adriatic Sea. On the central Adriatic side, Marche lies above Abruzzo, with the much smaller Molise farther south. Umbria is the only landlocked region in central Italy that does not touch an international border.

A reliable practice routine

Divide Italy into north, center, south, and islands, and complete one group at a time before attempting all 20 answers. After a mistake, identify the region's coastline or neighboring regions instead of memorizing only the correct click. Repeat until you can move through the peninsula in order without relying on trial and error.
