Italy region shape quiz
Identify Italy's 20 regions from isolated silhouettes. Without neighboring regions on screen, coastlines, proportions, islands, and boundary angles become the main clues.
Start with unmistakable outlines
Sicily has a broad triangular form, while Sardinia is a tall island outline. Apulia creates the heel of the Italian peninsula, and Calabria forms its toe. Liguria is recognizable by its long, narrow coastal curve.
Compare similar mainland shapes
The compact Aosta Valley and Molise can be separated from larger neighbors by proportion and detail. Compare Tuscany, Lazio, and Campania by their western coastlines, then study the inland edges of Umbria and Basilicata.
Improve visual recall
- Treat each silhouette as a pattern rather than a miniature map
- Learn distinctive coastal regions before inland regions
- Compare difficult pairs in consecutive rounds
- Return to the map quiz to review neighbors and position
Read coastlines and island groups
Coastal detail distinguishes regions that may otherwise appear similar. Veneto includes the upper Adriatic edge, Marche has a compact eastern coast, and Tuscany combines a long western coast with offshore islands. Sicily's silhouette may include small surrounding islands in the quiz, so focus first on the dominant main-island triangle.
Practice shape recognition without scale
Each region is enlarged to fit the question area, which means Aosta Valley can appear as large as Sicily on screen. Ignore apparent size and examine width, height, coast placement, and protruding corners. When an outline is difficult, name two features before answering; this builds recognition that remains useful even when the shape is rotated or displayed at another size.
