France regional capitals map quiz overview
The France regional capitals map quiz asks you to read a regional capital and choose the matching region on the map. It covers the 13 metropolitan regions, including Corsica, Île-de-France, Brittany, Normandy, Occitanie, and Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur.
Why regional capitals are useful to practice
France's regional map is compact but varied. Some regions are easy to anchor by a major city, such as Paris for Île-de-France, Lyon for Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes, Marseille for Provence-Alpes-Côte d’Azur, and Toulouse for Occitanie.
Other pairings are more specific: Dijon for Bourgogne-Franche-Comté, Rennes for Brittany, Orléans for Centre-Val de Loire, Rouen for Normandy, and Nantes for Pays de la Loire. Learning the capital together with the region shape makes the map easier to remember.
How to learn the map
Start with the largest urban anchors, then group nearby regions. In the north, compare Lille, Rouen, Paris, Strasbourg, and Rennes. In the south, compare Bordeaux, Toulouse, Marseille, Lyon, and Ajaccio.
Repeating the quiz helps separate regions that can be confused by name or position, such as Centre-Val de Loire and Pays de la Loire, or Bourgogne-Franche-Comté and Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes.
